Privacy and rules
Last updated 29 October 2026.
The short version
- No real name or payment details are needed to play. An email address is optional.
- There are no ads, no tracking and no selling of data.
- You can download everything stored about your account, or delete your account, from the Account page at any time.
What’s stored about you
- Your hunter name and nickname. Other players can see these, and your avatar, on the hiscores.
- Your password, stored only as a scrambled hash (scrypt). Nobody, including the game’s owner, can read it.
- Your email address, only if you choose to give one. It’s used for one thing: sending you a link to set a new password if you ask for it. It’s never shown to other players, shared or used for newsletters. You can change or remove it on the Account page.
- A recovery code, if you make one, also stored only as a hash.
- Your game progress: levels, floors, hunters, chests, achievements, stats and the like.
- A system log of the latest 60 things that happened in your game.
- When you joined and when you last played, used for the hiscores and to count active players.
What isn’t stored
- Your IP address is only kept in memory for up to an hour, to stop people guessing passwords or making lots of accounts. It’s never written to the database.
- No location, contacts or device details.
Cookies and other services
- The game sets one cookie, which keeps you logged in. It’s needed for the game to work, so there’s no cookie banner.
- The game remembers a few settings in your own browser, such as sound on or off. These never leave your device.
- Traffic passes through Cloudflare, which protects the site and provides its secure connection.
- The game’s fonts come from Google Fonts, so your browser contacts Google to download them.
- Password-reset emails are sent through Gmail.
Your choices
- See your data: “Download my data” on the Account page gives you everything stored about your account.
- Delete your account: “Delete my account” on the Account page removes your account, progress and log for good. Copies in the daily backups are overwritten within 7 days.
- Change your name or password on the Account page.
Rules
- Play fair. Don’t use bots, scripts or tools that play for you, and don’t try to exploit bugs. The in-game Shadow Steward is fine. If you find a bug, please report it.
- One account per person for the hiscores.
- No buying or selling accounts or progress for real money.
- Keep names friendly. Rude, hateful or misleading names (such as pretending to be staff) may be changed or the account suspended.
- Breaking the rules can lead to a name change, a reset or a suspended account.
Younger players
Gatebreaker has no chat or messaging between players. If you’re under 13, please ask a parent or carer before making an account.
Contact
For questions about your data, to report a bug or a player, or to ask for anything to be removed, email [email protected].
The small print
Gatebreaker is a free hobby game, provided as it is. It runs on a home computer, so it may sometimes be offline. Game balance can change, and in rare cases progress may need to be reset. If these terms change, the date at the top changes too.
